এই সোনাম ওয়াংচুকের অনশন, নিট ইস্যু আন্দোলন নিয়ে কথা হয়েছে আগেও। নিট নিয়ে আন্দোলন হোক। একশো বার হোক। সেখানে আমার সমর্থন আগেও ছিল, পরেও থাকবে। কিন্তু আমার আপত্তির জায়গাও আছে এখানে।
প্রথমতঃ যে মঞ্চে কাশ্মীর, 'হিন্দু ফ্যাসিজম', ব্রাহ্মিনিক্যাল প্যাট্রিয়ার্কি ইত্যাদি প্রভৃতি ইয়ে হবে, হিন্দু দেব-দেবী নিয়ে জোক মারা চলবে- সে মঞ্চকে সমর্থন করা আমার পক্ষে সম্ভব নয়। দ্বিতীয়ত যে মঞ্চে উমর খালিদের বাবা সৈয়দ কাসিম রাসূল ইলিয়াস, সুজানা অরুন্ধতী রয়, হর্ষ মান্দার ধরনের লোকজন গিয়েছে, সে মঞ্চটি কোন উদ্দেশ্যে ব্যবহার হচ্ছে বা হবে সেসব নিয়ে জ্ঞান বিতরণ করা অপ্রয়োজনীয় বলেই মনে করি। আপের সঙ্গে যোগ, বা অন্য যে কোনো রাজনৈতিক দলের সঙ্গে কানেকশনও গৌণ ধরছি। এই সিজেপির কচিনেতাদের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় হিন্দু ধর্ম নিয়ে বিভিন্ন মন্তব্য শুনুন। হিন্দু টেররিজম, শুনেছেন?
গাড়ি বোঝাই করে ইট-পাথর নেওয়া হয়েছে। এমনকি সুটকেস বোঝাই করে ইট-পাথর নেওয়া হয়েছে। ঠিক কী উদ্দেশ্যে? মন্দিরে হামলা হয়েছে। কেন? পুলিশের উপর হামলা হয়েছে। পুলিশ কি নিরস্ত্র বসে থাকবে? অন্তত আমার এক বিচক্ষণ বন্ধুর দাবি সেটাই। বন্ধুকে বিচক্ষণ বলার পেছনে ব্যজস্তুতি নেই। ছেলেটি অত্যন্ত বুদ্ধিমান। কিন্তু সম্প্রতি এই আন্দোলনের প্রেক্ষিতে আমাদের দুজনের বেশ কিছু বাক্যবিনিময় হয়েছে। উত্তপ্ত বেশি আমার দিক থেকেই। আমি বরাবরই দ্রুত রেগে যাই। যাই হোক, আসল কথায় আসি। কিন্তু বেশ কিছু কমেন্ট আমাকে অবাক করেছে।
মিত্রবরের যুক্তি পুলিশের সংযম এবং 'অহিংস' পদক্ষেপের পক্ষে। তার কথা হলো ব্ল্যাকস্টোনের সেই "দশজন অপরাধী পার পেয়ে যাক, কিন্তু একজন নির্দোষ মানুষের যেন সাজা না হয়।" ওর মতে, এই নীতি মেনেই পুলিশের উচিত ছিল কোনো বলপ্রয়োগ না করা; পুলিশের লাঠিচার্জ করার কোনো প্রয়োজনই ছিল না; বরং কাঁদানে গ্যাস ব্যবহার করে পরিস্থিতি সামাল দেওয়া যেত।
সবচেয়ে অবাক করা যে পয়েন্টটা ও বলল, তা হলো পরিস্থিতি যখন উত্তপ্ত, তখন পুলিশের উচিত ছিল সাময়িকভাবে ওই জায়গা থেকে পিছিয়ে আসা। তাৎক্ষণিক কোনো অ্যাকশনে না গিয়ে, পরে সিসিটিভি ফুটেজ বা ভিডিও দেখে অনুপ্রবেশকারী এবং হিংস্র লোকগুলোকে চিহ্নিত করে গ্রেফতার করা যেত। ওর মতে, সরকার এবং পুলিশের উচিত ছিল ধৈর্য ধরে পরিস্থিতি শান্ত করার চেষ্টা করা, এমন কোনো পদক্ষেপ না নেওয়া যাতে উত্তেজনা আরও বাড়ে।
কিন্তু এই কথাগুলো আমার কাছে অবাস্তব আর হাস্যকর মনে হয়েছে। আমার বক্তব্য খুব স্পষ্ট। প্রথমত, আত্মরক্ষার অধিকার সবার আছে, পুলিশেরও আছে। যখন একটা উন্মত্ত ভিড় সাংবাদিকদের ওপর হামলা চালাচ্ছে, মব লিঞ্চিংয়ের চেষ্টা করছে, এমনকি একজন গর্ভবতী পুলিশ অফিসারকেও ছাড়ছে না, তখন পুলিশ কি মার খেয়ে অহিংসার বাণী আওড়াবে?
দ্বিতীয়ত, চোখের সামনে যখন সরকারি সম্পত্তি ধ্বংস করা হচ্ছে, পেট্রোল পাম্পে ভাঙচুর করা হচ্ছে, তখন পুলিশ যদি 'পরে ভিডিও দেখে ব্যবস্থা নেব' বলে পিছু হটে, তবে সেটা একটা মারাত্মক ভুল দৃষ্টান্ত তৈরি করে। এই পিছু হটে যাও থিওরি কাজের কাজ কিছুই করতো বলে মনে হয়? ঘটনা ঘটে যাওয়ার পর সিসিটিভি দেখে ব্যবস্থা নেওয়ার অপেক্ষা করলে ততক্ষণে যা ক্ষতি হওয়ার তা হয়েই যেত। যেমন পুলিশ থাকতেও হয়েছে।
সবশেষে আরও একটা কথা বলেছে বেচারা। 'আরে যা'ই হয়েছে সরকার উত্তর দেবে, তোদের কেন দিতে হচ্ছে?' কারণ আছে। সরকারি সম্পত্তি ধ্বংস হয়েছে, আর ওগুলো আমাদের ট্যাক্সের টাকায় তৈরি পাবলিক প্রপার্টি। আমি একটা সুস্থ সমাজের বেসিক কমন সেন্সের বলছি।সাধারণ জনগণের ব্যক্তিগত সম্পত্তিও ধ্বংস হয়েছে। প্লাস, বারবার সব বুদ্ধিজীবী টাইপের লোকজনের পক্ষ থেকে দেখছি একটা গিল্ট ট্র্যাপে ফেলার চেষ্টা হচ্ছে এই হলে যে কেন আমি বা আমরা সমর্থন করছি না। উত্তর দেওয়া দরকার। কারণ সরকারের দালালি না করলেও এইসব ফালতু ইন্টেলেকচুয়াল বাবলে পিন ফোটানো দরকার হয় মাঝে মাঝে। আমি আন্দোলনকে সমর্থন করি, কিন্তু আন্দোলনের ছদ্মবেশে ঘটা সন্ত্রাসকে নয়। সরকার কী উত্তর দেবে সেটা সরকারের রাজনৈতিক বাধ্যবাধকতা হতে পারে, কিন্তু নাগরিক হিসেবে সাদাকে সাদা আর কালোকে কালো বলাটা আমার 'নৈতিক দায়িত্ব' না হলেও অন্তত মতপ্রকাশের অধিকার তো আছে! এবং, হ্যাঁ, আমার বায়াস অবশ্যই আছে। থাকবেও।
আমি নিট অব্যবস্থাপনার, দুর্নীতির বিরুদ্ধে আন্দোলনকে সমর্থন করি এবং করব। কিন্তু আন্দোলনের নামে এই তাণ্ডব, ভাঙচুর, ইট-পাথর ছোঁড়া বা অপরাধমূলক কাজকে কোনোভাবেই আন্দোলন বলা যায় না। প্রতিবাদের একটা ভাষা থাকে, আর অপরাধের আলাদা রূপ থাকে- এই দুটোর মধ্যে একটা সীমারেখা টানাটা খুব জরুরি। অপরাধীদের প্রতি এই অযাচিত সহানুভূতি দেখানোটা অন্তত আমার পক্ষে সম্ভব নয়।
"Marna Nehi Chahiye Tha.." IS NOT a valid argument. It's your opinion. Mine differs. রাষ্ট্র বা প্রশাসন কোনো ইমোশনাল ড্রামা দিয়ে চলে না, চলে আইন আর বাস্তবের নিয়মে। পুলিশ তো সকালে ঘুম থেকে উঠে শখ করে কাউকে পেটাতে যায়নি। যখন একটা বেআইনি (হ্যাঁ, বেআইনি) জমায়েত সহিংস হয়ে ওঠে, ওয়ার্নিং দেওয়ার পরও শোনে না, তখন পুলিশকে বলপ্রয়োগ করতেই হয়।
সবচেয়ে বড় প্রশ্ন হলো এই "মারা উচিত হয়নি" ফিলোসফিটা কি শুধু পুলিশের ক্ষেত্রেই প্রযোজ্য? যারা গাড়ি বা সুটকেস ভর্তি করে ইট-পাথর নিয়ে এসেছিল, যারা মন্দিরে বা পুলিশের ওপর হামলা করেছিল, তাদের কি একবারও মনে হয়েছিল যে "মারা উচিত নয়"? যখন কর্তব্যরত পুলিশ মার খায়, তখন এইসব নীতিবাগীশ বুদ্ধিজীবীদের নীতিবোধ কোথায় যায়? আত্মরক্ষার অধিকার কি শুধু অপরাধীদের একচেটিয়া? পুলিশের কি কোনো মানবাধিকার বা আত্মরক্ষার অধিকার নেই?

মুখস্থনির্ভর "বঙ্কিমচন্দ্রের জন্মসাল লেখো", "অমুকের প্রথম কাব্যগ্রন্থের নাম লেখো" ধরনের প্রশ্নের বাইরে বেরোনোর অতি অবশ্যই প্রসংসনীয়। সৃজনশীলতাকে গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে। পরীক্ষার্থীকে মানুষ হিসেবে ভাবতে বলা হয়েছে, কেবল তথ্যভাণ্ডার হিসেবে নয়। এই প্রচেষ্টা প্রশংসার দাবিদার।
...কিন্তু।
একটু Devil's Advocate হই।
ধরা যাক, আমি বাংলা অনার্সে ভর্তি হতে এসেছি। আমি রবীন্দ্রনাথ, বঙ্কিম, জীবনানন্দ, শরৎচন্দ্র, মাইকেল, সুধীন্দ্রনাথ, ভাষাবিজ্ঞান, সাহিত্যতত্ত্ব, অলঙ্কার, ছন্দ, পাঠ-বিশ্লেষণ—সব মিলিয়ে যথেষ্ট প্রস্তুতি নিয়ে এসেছি।
প্রশ্নপত্র খুললাম।
প্রথমেই দেখি, "ঈশ্বরকে যদি তিনটি প্রশ্ন করার সুযোগ পেতে..."
এরপর, "পথের পাঁচালীর দুর্গার সঙ্গে তোমার এক কাল্পনিক ট্রেন-সফর।"
আরও দেখি, "প্রিয় সাহিত্যিককে একটি খোলা চিঠি লেখো।"
এক মুহূর্তের জন্য মনে হতে পারে, আমি কি বাংলা বিভাগের প্রবেশিকা দিচ্ছি, নাকি কোনো সাহিত্যপত্রিকার পূজাসংখ্যার লেখা আহ্বান দেখছি?
সমস্যা প্রশ্নগুলোর মধ্যে নয়। সমস্যাটা হলো এগুলোই যদি পুরো পরীক্ষা হয়ে যায়।
ভাবুন, দুজন পরীক্ষার্থী।
প্রথমজন বাংলা সাহিত্য নিয়ে ভীষণ পড়াশোনা করেছে। সাহিত্যতত্ত্ব বোঝে, কবিতা বিশ্লেষণ করতে পারে, ভাষার সূক্ষ্মতা ধরতে পারে। কিন্তু গল্প বানিয়ে লিখতে পারে না।
দ্বিতীয়জন দুর্দান্ত গল্প লেখে। ভাষা ঝরঝরে। কিন্তু সাহিত্যের ইতিহাস, তত্ত্ব বা পাঠ-বিশ্লেষণে তার দখল সীমিত।
এই প্রশ্নপত্রে দ্বিতীয়জন এগিয়ে যাওয়ার সম্ভাবনা যথেষ্ট বেশি। অর্থাৎ, Creative Writing-এর দক্ষতাকে Literary Studies-এর যোগ্যতার সমার্থক ধরে নেওয়া হচ্ছে।
দুটো এক জিনিস নয়।
আরেকটা বিষয়।
ধরা যাক, "ঈশ্বরকে তিনটি প্রশ্ন" বিষয়ে দুজন অসাধারণ লেখা লিখল।
একজন নাস্তিক।
আরেকজন গভীর আধ্যাত্মিক।
দুজনের লেখাই চমৎকার।
এবার নম্বর দেবেন পরীক্ষক।
প্রশ্ন হলো, কীসের ভিত্তিতে?
কার দর্শন বেশি ভালো লাগল?
কার ভাষা?
কার ভাবনা?
নাকি কার সঙ্গে পরীক্ষকের মতাদর্শ বেশি মেলে?
এখানেই আসে Subjectivity।
যে কোনো প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষায় সবচেয়ে জরুরি বিষয়গুলোর একটি হলো Reliability।
একই উত্তর পাঁচজন পরীক্ষকের কাছে গেলে নম্বর প্রায় কাছাকাছি আসা উচিত।
এখানে তেমন নিশ্চয়তা কোথায়?
আরেকটা মজার ব্যাপার।
একটি প্রশ্ন:
"কৃত্রিম বুদ্ধিমত্তা: সুখের কথা, ভয়ের কথা।"
এই প্রশ্নটা বাংলা, রাষ্ট্রবিজ্ঞান, সাংবাদিকতা, সমাজবিজ্ঞান, কম্পিউটার সায়েন্স- প্রায় সব বিভাগের প্রবেশিকাতেই দিব্যি মানিয়ে যায়।
কিন্তু বাংলা বিভাগের প্রবেশিকায় প্রশ্ন করলে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই প্রশ্ন আসে
বাংলা সাহিত্য কোথায়?
আরেকটি বিষয় উল্লেখযোগ্য। প্রশ্নপত্রে জনপ্রিয় সংস্কৃতি (pop culture)-র উপস্থিতি বেশ স্পষ্ট। উত্তমকুমার-সৌমিত্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়, সিনেমার চরিত্র বা চলচ্চিত্রের নানা অনুষঙ্গ বাংলা সংস্কৃতিরই অংশ, এতে আপত্তির কিছু নেই। বরং বাংলা সাহিত্য ও সিনেমার পারস্পরিক সম্পর্ক দীর্ঘদিনের। কিন্তু প্রশ্ন হলো, একটি স্নাতক প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষায় এই ধরনের সাংস্কৃতিক রেফারেন্স কতটা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হওয়া উচিত? একজন শিক্ষার্থীর চলচ্চিত্র-পরিচিতি বা জনপ্রিয় সাংস্কৃতিক পরিসরের সঙ্গে পরিচয় অবশ্যই মূল্যবান, কিন্তু তা বাংলা ভাষা ও সাহিত্যে তার একাডেমিক প্রস্তুতি, ভাষাবোধ কিংবা বিশ্লেষণক্ষমতার বিকল্প হতে পারে না। ভর্তি পরীক্ষার মূল লক্ষ্য হওয়া উচিত সেই মৌলিক সক্ষমতাগুলির মূল্যায়ন, কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সাংস্কৃতিক রুচির নয়।
আমার আপত্তি সৃজনশীলতার বিরুদ্ধে নয়।
বরং যে কোনো সাহিত্য বিভাগের প্রশ্নপত্রে সৃজনশীল লেখা থাকা উচিত।
কিন্তু শুধু সৃজনশীল লেখাই যদি নির্বাচন নির্ধারণ করে, তখন সমস্যা শুরু হয়।
বাংলা অনার্সে ভর্তি হতে আসা একজন শিক্ষার্থীর মধ্যে আমরা কী খুঁজছি?
শুধু কল্পনাশক্তি?
নাকি-
ভাষাবোধ, পাঠাভ্যাস, সাহিত্য-অনুধাবন, বিশ্লেষণী ক্ষমতা, যুক্তি নির্মাণ, সমালোচনামূলক চিন্তা, এবং অবশ্যই সৃজনশীলতা?
শেষের তালিকাটাই সম্ভবত বেশি যৌক্তিক।
সবচেয়ে বড় কথা, একটি ভালো প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষা এমন হওয়া উচিত, যেখানে একজন পরীক্ষার্থী বেরিয়ে এসে বলতে পারে-
"আমি যা পড়েছি, তার যথাযথ মূল্যায়ন হয়েছে।"
এই প্রশ্নপত্র দেখে অনেকেরই হয়তো মনে হতে পারে "আমি যা পড়েছি, তার চেয়ে আমি কতটা গল্প বানাতে পারি, সেটাই বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছিল।"
এবং এখানেই, আমার মতে, প্রশ্নপত্রটির সবচেয়ে বড় সীমাবদ্ধতা।
সৃজনশীলতার প্রশংসা অবশ্যই প্রাপ্য। কিন্তু সৃজনশীলতাকে একাডেমিক সক্ষমতার একমাত্র মাপকাঠি বানিয়ে ফেলা; সেটিই প্রশ্নসাপেক্ষ।
পুনশ্চঃ 'চান্স পেয়ে দেখা' বলবেন না। পারবো না। অমন পন্ডিত নই আমি। টেকনিক্যালি সাহিত্যের ছাত্র হলেও বাংলা বা ইংরেজি, উভয় সাহিত্যের সঙ্গেই সম্পর্ক তেমন ভালো নয়।
P.S. Later, I learned that the heavily circulated portion was not the only question asked. I stand corrected for misjudging. But one of my concerns still stands: It's heavily subjective and prepared in a specific way to filter out students with certain inclinations. To be more precise- it's a bias-checking filter in every sense.
Throughout the vast majority of human existence, our experiences were fleeting, vanishing nearly as rapidly as they occurred. A family gathering ended and survived only in memory. A sunset faded beyond the horizon and was gone. A traveller visited a distant city, returned home, and recounted the journey through stories that grew less precise with each retelling. Human beings understood that moments were temporary. That impermanence was not viewed as a flaw. It was simply part of life. Today, nearly every experience can be preserved. Smartphones have placed cameras in the pockets of billions of people, enabling instant photography and video sharing with audiences worldwide. A birthday party, a holiday, a concert, a meal, or even an ordinary afternoon walk can now be documented within seconds. At first glance, this appears to be a technological achievement. Yet, it also marks the moment we became the directors, actors, and audiences of our own lives, turning every fleeting instance into a production. Humanity has solved one of its oldest limitations: the inability to preserve the present. Why rely on memory when technology allows us to record almost everything?
Yet there is a strange contradiction at the centre of modern life. The more capable we become of documenting our experiences, the less capable we often seem of fully inhabiting them. Consider a concert. Thousands of people gather to hear live music. Yet when the performance begins, hundreds of phones immediately rise into the air. Many audience members watch the event on a screen while standing only metres from the stage. Similar scenes occur at sporting events, tourist attractions, weddings, and even family dinners. Increasingly, people are not merely participating in experiences. They are simultaneously documenting them. The smartphone screen becomes a literal frame—a proscenium arch that separates the participant from the experience, turning the lived event into a curated performance for the invisible audience waiting behind the lens.
This shift reflects a bigger psychological change. Historically, photographs functioned primarily as records of the past. They were stored in albums, framed on walls, or shared among close friends and family. Social media transformed this relationship. Platforms such as Instagram and TikTok turned documentation into public performance. The purpose of a photograph gradually shifted from remembering an event to displaying it. As a result, many experiences are now viewed through the lens of a potential audience. Rather than asking, "Am I enjoying this?" people often find themselves asking, consciously or unconsciously, "How will this look?" The experience becomes intertwined with its presentation.
Sociologist Erving Goffman argued that social life resembles a theatrical performance. Individuals present different versions of themselves to different audiences, carefully managing impressions and behaviours. While this tendency existed long before the internet, social media has expanded dramatically in scale. The audience is no longer limited to friends, colleagues, or neighbours. It may consist of hundreds, thousands, or even millions of people. This constant awareness of observation can alter how individuals experience reality itself. Psychologists refer to a related phenomenon as self-objectification, a process in which people begin viewing themselves from an external perspective. This external perspective is the hallmark of the 'performative present.' We cease to be the subject of our own experiences and instead become the objects of a public performance, perpetually adjusting our 'script' to satisfy the imagined expectations of an audience. Instead of existing within an experience, they become spectators of their own lives. Attention shifts away from the immediate moment and towards evaluating how that moment appears from the outside.
In a sense, many people now carry an invisible audience with them wherever they go.
This dynamic helps explain why certain experiences increasingly feel incomplete unless they are shared. A holiday destination is photographed before it is explored. Food is arranged before it is eaten. A moment of celebration is interrupted by the need to capture evidence of it. Documentation no longer follows experience. It often accompanies it from beginning to end.
The irony is that the very act of recording a moment may weaken our connection to it. Research on memory suggests that people sometimes remember less about experiences they extensively photograph. Psychologists describe this as the "photo-taking impairment effect." When individuals rely on cameras to preserve information, they often pay less attention to the details unfolding before them. The brain effectively delegates part of its memory function to the device.
This reflects a broader process known as cognitive offloading. Human beings frequently use external tools to reduce mental effort. Calendars remember appointments. Search engines remember facts. Smartphones remember phone numbers. Photography increasingly performs a similar role for personal experiences. Rather than storing memories internally, people rely on digital archives to store them externally.
The consequence is subtle but significant. Moments become collected rather than absorbed.
There is another force at work as well. Social media platforms operate within what economists and media scholars call the Attention Economy. Human attention is a limited resource, and digital platforms compete aggressively to capture it. Photographs and videos do not simply preserve experiences; they become units of social currency. Likes, views, comments, and shares provide immediate feedback about how successfully an experience has been presented. Over time, this can blur the distinction between living and performing. Activities that generate stronger reactions online may begin to receive greater priority offline. Experiences become selected not solely because they are meaningful, but because they are shareable. The French philosopher Guy Debord anticipated aspects of this transformation decades before the rise of social media. In The Society of the Spectacle, he argued that modern societies increasingly replace direct experience with representations of experience. Images begin to mediate reality. People encounter the world not as participants but as observers. The smartphone has brought this process into everyday life.
This does not mean that photography, social media, or documentation are inherently harmful. Photographs preserve family histories. Videos capture important milestones. Digital platforms allow people separated by vast distances to remain connected. These technologies provide genuine benefits. The issue is not that experiences are recorded. The issue emerges when recording becomes the primary purpose of the experience itself.
A photograph should ideally be a by-product of a meaningful moment. Increasingly, the moment risks becoming a by-product of the photograph.
Despite these trends, a persistent human desire for unmediated experience remains. People continue to seek activities that pull them away from constant observation. Long walks without phones, digital detoxes, mindfulness practices, and retreats all suggest a growing recognition that something valuable may be lost when every moment becomes content. Individuals still crave experiences that are theirs alone. There is a profound irony in the modern pursuit of perfect documentation. Human beings developed technologies to preserve memories because memories fade. Yet in our attempt to capture everything, we risk creating distance between ourselves and the very moments we wish to preserve. We become archivists of our own lives rather than participants within them. Perhaps the central challenge of modern life is not deciding what should be recorded. That task has become effortless. The greater challenge is deciding what should remain unrecorded. For most of history, countless meaningful moments vanished without photographs, videos, or audiences. A conversation between friends. A quiet walk at dusk. A laugh shared between family members. No record survives of these experiences, yet their value was never diminished by their disappearance. In a world defined by the performativity of the present, the most radical act is one that goes unrecorded. The rare ability to experience something fully, without the burden of staging it for an audience, is becoming the most valuable form of freedom.

People have always stored large amounts of information in their minds, before the advent of library systems, cloud storage, and technological innovations. Farmers would have to remember when to plant crops, when the weather would change, and be aware of the nuances of the land they cultivated. Sailors had to become acquainted with the stars as they travelled across oceans, learning to use them as guides through years of observation. To make a profit, merchants kept track of prices, debts, trade routes, and customers mentally. Countless cultures passed down their histories orally through storytelling, song, ritual and oral tradition. Forgetting something could mean financial loss, social humiliation, navigational error or in some cases, death. However, because memory is not a perfect entity, many people readily accepted that it was flawed. Each time people remembered a story, they would slightly alter it; sometimes, details would fade, and how we view events would change over time. Because of this, no one thought of memory as an infallible record, because memory did not exist merely to preserve information but also to remember what is important. . Human beings also understood that remembering requires selecting, interpreting, and creating meaning from the past; therefore, the past exists because of the rememberer.
Modern advancements have changed the relationship between human beings and their surroundings; the extent of these changes would seem uncanny to past generations. Nowadays, there is an external way to store nearly all the information we use on a regular basis; our phones hold onto our birthdays, passwords, appointments, routes, grocery lists, and contact information, and Google can return relevant facts in seconds. Cloud storage will allow someone to keep their pictures, text messages, word documents, and videos indefinitely. Through this technological creation, humanity has created a massive external memory system in the form of a digital extension of our brain that will allow us to carry this extension wherever we go. At first glance, one might perceive this as one of the most remarkable intellectual accomplishments in history. Why take the time to remember how to get to a location when you can use GPS for turn-by-turn directions? Why remember a phone number when your address book contains thousands? Why try to remember everything that happened during a vacation when your picture gallery contains hundreds of pictures of everything that you experienced (dinner, attractions, sunsets, etc.)? Psychologists refer to this behaviour as cognitive offloading, in which people shift the burden of mental tasks onto external devices. Cognitive offloading has been practised by people throughout history (writing things down is an example). So are calendars, notebooks, atlases, and filing cabinets. Humans have always invented new technologies because they reduce the cognitive work individuals need to perform. The difference today is not the existence of these tools but their scope. Earlier technologies supported memory. Increasingly, modern technologies replace it. Many people can still recite a childhood friend's telephone number despite not using it for twenty years, yet struggle to recall the number of someone they speak to every day. The information exists. It simply exists elsewhere. The device remembers so that the individual no longer needs to.
There may be an even bigger change in knowledge than in memory. For the most part, throughout history, it was difficult to obtain knowledge/answers. If a person wanted an answer, they would regularly have to go through a multi-step process. They may need to consult a book, search through an archive, find a professional expert, or spend a lot of time reading, reflecting, and/or considering the information they have found. Because of the demands and frustrations of locating the information, they developed a holistic understanding of the subject. The facts they knew were related to other facts. The ideas were built on their previous knowledge. Over time, a significant, consistent view of the world was developed. The internet has dramatically changed this way of learning. You can find an answer to nearly any question in seconds. While this efficiency is fantastic, it creates a false sense of security that leads to the phenomenon researchers define as the Google Effect or Digital Amnesia. When people know they can find information with minimal effort later, they are much less likely to retain it; instead, they know where to find it. Our memory is based on where we can find it, rather than where in the brain we stored the answer. This adaptation is efficient for several reasons – the brain is appropriately adapting to its environment. Search engines can help you find information; however, they do not directly format that information. Merely knowing where to look for a given fact is very different from recognising how that fact can connect with the other hundreds of facts. Just because a historian knows historical dates does not mean they are an expert historian. A scientist is much more than just a data collector. When it comes to expert knowledge, it develops through building bridges among concepts or by having isolated data. The greatest hazard of having lots of information is not a lack of information but rather a false sense of possessing knowledge. In all of history, there has never been such a large quantity of information available to our society, yet so many people cannot turn it into truthful understanding. The present time has no shortage of information available to us; however, there is a huge deficit of people able to pay attention to it. Therefore, we must remember that although many people have access to abundant data, we are currently experiencing a shift in the density of information, from an access-based economy to one based solely on interpreting and understanding the data to develop additional innovative solutions for the future.
People today have moved beyond simply saving memories and are now documenting them directly. For most of the 20th Century, photographs were relatively hard to come by due to high film prices and lengthy development times; as a result, people tended to reserve photographs for special occasions (e.g., weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, holidays, and important life events). Most life memories went undocumented and lived only in memory. Today, this has reversed completely; average smartphone users can take thousands of photos every year without any cost or limitations on their phone use. Now, entire lives are stored in extremely detailed archives of memory. People take photos of their meals before eating; people hold up their phones to watch concerts from above the crowd; visitors stream to popular tourist sites only to be obscured by crowds of arms in the air, taking pictures of sights they haven't even looked at yet. Future historians will likely have a much clearer and more complete visual record of everyday people living in the 21st century than of any people or events in the past. Historians will be able to see what food people ate, which animals were kept as pets, where people went on vacation, and how many times individuals photographed sunsets. What future historians will probably not be able to tell is whether those taking the photos while they were there were actually paying attention to their surroundings. Studies on the photo-taking impairment effect suggest that recording an event can often disrupt memory of the experience itself because your attention is drawn away from the memory to taking a picture of it. You have replaced experiencing the moment with experiencing the act of preserving the moment through photography. This has created a strange paradox. Today, people have more records of their lives than any generation before them. However, many people can no longer remember their lives at all if they cannot use their phone or camera to do so. There are thousands of photographs stored in digital files, sorted by date, place, and facial recognition, but most are never even looked at. We have built large museums of personal memorabilia, but we never visit them.
The greatest impact of this shift may be seen when the concept of identity rests on that of memory. From the beginning of time, human beings have connected their personal identities to stories about themselves and others. Memories do not simply exist in isolated pieces of information; rather, they are connected to form, out of these experiences, an individual's identity, where we began and how we have been shaped into who we are at a given moment in time. Memories such as those from childhood, family traditions, successes/failures, relationships, regrets, and turning points all connect to form a narrative that identifies who we are, where we are going in life, and provides continuity from the past through the present into the future. These individual narratives of memory answer a question that unites humanity: "Who am I?" Digital technology does an excellent job of preserving a record of information about memory, however it does not do the same with creating a narrative - Digital technology stores a record or record of data in a database, but does not create meaning, so for example; if I attempt to use my smartphone to locate where I was at 7 years ago on an April afternoon, I can find out exactly where I was, however, it does not provide me with a reason as to why that day was significant to my life. Likewise, a cloud archive may contain every digital photograph from a family vacation, yet it would not necessarily enable recreating the emotion felt during a conversation that occurred on that journey. The process of developing meaning involves reflecting upon, interpreting, and reconstructing memories in the absence of them. Paradoxically, one of the greatest components in reconstructing events is the absence or forgetting of the event, as modern culture considers the act of forgetting to be bad and corrects it with more advanced technology, or more storage options, and so on. Forgetting is not simply the negative aspect of our memory; rather, it is one of the most significant factors in developing meaningful connections to the events recorded in our memories.
Forgetting forces selection. Selection creates emphasis. Emphasis creates narrative. Narrative creates identity. Without forgetting, memory would become an indiscriminate archive in which everything had equal importance, and nothing had significance. The irony of the digital revolution is that our society has essentially solved the technical problem of storing information in an archive for future access; we have far more storage capacity than humans have ever had. Everything we send/receive in terms of email messages, photos, GPS positions, and paperwork will exist for as long as there is a physical archive to keep it. Simply storing information in an archive was never the ultimate hurdle; the real challenge has always been converting that information into understanding, and, through experience, into the creation of meaning. The digital world can create copies of the past with incredible fidelity. It, however, cannot choose which parts of the past should receive a permanent place in an individual's life story. Ultimately, that responsibility remains, and perhaps still is, completely, and perhaps somewhat, comforting, a human function. Therefore, the question for our digital generation is not how to remember more. It is how to remember well. Because information can be stored forever, but meaning still has to be made.

For most of human history, boredom was as unavoidable as life and death. A shepherd watching a flock moving across a hillside, a sailor staring at a horizon that does not change, a traveller spending days on the road, or even just a kid sitting beneath a tree with nothing particular to do, all shared a common experience: long stretches of mental emptiness. Such moments were rarely celebrated. These patches were often uncomfortable, boring, and frustrating; they have always been part of the human experience.
Nowadays, individuals have access to a world of stimulation in their pockets or purses. There are countless ways to be "busy" or "entertained" while you wait at stop lights, stand in lines, ride elevators, and sit at cafés alone in seconds when you start to get bored. As soon as you begin to feel bored, your hand instinctively reaches for your phone, and within seconds, there’s information in the form of news, videos, text, music, games, podcasts, commercials, and social media sites that fill up that spot of time you were just bored in. That moment of silence will be replaced within a second by information streaming into your hand from your phone. On the surface, this may seem like a significant win for mankind. Humans conquered one of mankind's oldest sources of annoyance: boredom. Why would you continue to be bored when you have entertainment at your fingertips available to you every minute? But there is a downside to this story.
We now have more stimulation than at any point in history, and most people are feeling restless, unable to concentrate, distracted, and mentally drained. The disappearance of boredom has not produced contentment; instead, it has created a new form of unease. The environment our ancestors lived in has changed significantly, creating what psychologists call an evolutionary mismatch. Traits that were highly advantageous in our ancestral environment- like a hyper-awareness of novelty or sudden changes to survive predators- are now maladaptive in a digital world where novelty is artificially manufactured and endless. For hundreds of thousands of years, information arrived slowly. News travelled at the speed of a person walking or on a horse. Social interaction was limited to small groups. Visual stimuli consisted of landscapes, weather, animals, and faces. The brain developed mechanisms which rewarded attention to novelty because novelty often contained valuable information. A strange sound in the bushes might signal danger; an unfamiliar plant might signal food. Curiosity had a survival value.
Modern technology has taken full advantage of these systems. Social media feeds, short videos, alerts, and digital platforms rely on novelty to keep people engaged. Each time we swipe, we have the potential to discover something new. This dynamic perfectly mirrors the mechanics of a Skinner Box, famously used by psychologist B.F. Skinner to study operant conditioning. Just as a laboratory animal will endlessly press a lever when a reward is delivered at random, unpredictable intervals, human beings will endlessly scroll because we never know exactly when we will encounter a highly rewarding post. Most of the new information is unimportant, but because the next item might be humorous, amazing, or satisfying, we remain trapped in this cycle of anticipation and reward indefinitely.
People are not just overloaded with information now; they also lack time for their minds to process the large volume and velocity of material coming at them. After reading an impactful story, we often recall the characters and key ideas weeks or even months later, spending considerable time reflecting on the book. Digital media, on the other hand, offers little time for reflection. Videos are routinely replaced by new ones, a single news headline is quickly buried by multiple new articles, and thought may occur only for an instant before it's replaced by new stimuli. As a result, people find themselves surrounded by a sea of knowledge with no opportunity to reflect on what they have consumed. Our minds become cluttered but not enriched. We generate bits and pieces of information but are unable to construct a complete mental picture, and thus we become bored.
While boredom is a difficult feeling to encounter, it offers a valuable psychological benefit: it represents a transitional space between what our senses perceive as stimulation from our environment and what we mentally project as the focus of our internal thoughts. When we experience boredom, our minds tap into the memory bank of knowledge about our pasts. Neuroscientists attribute this vital state to the activation of the Default Mode Network (DMN)- a network of interacting brain regions that lights up precisely when we are not focused on the outside world. When we let our DMN take over, our minds generate curiosity and create opportunities for daydreaming. The brain begins to draw parallels and associations between seemingly unrelated thoughts.
Many creative breakthroughs appear during precisely these periods of boredom. For example, people often say that they get their best ideas while walking, bathing, planting, or looking out a window. These physical activities keep the body busy, affording the requisite mental latitude for one's ruminations to roam free. The brain begins to rearrange information, experiment with possibilities, and discover unexpected associations. Creativity needs a source to draw from. It also requires time when you do not have many things happening to you; this is when you start reorganising things in your mind based on the information you have. Musicians need to hear music and hear silences; authors need blank paper and some books to write an interesting story. If you keep feeding your mind new information, you won't have enough time to process it, because you constantly get new ideas without being able to use the old ones.
There is another reason people seek stimulation so relentlessly. The issue is not always pleasure. Often, it is avoidance. In psychology, this is known as experiential avoidance; the tendency to artificially suppress or escape negative thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. When external distractions disappear, people encounter their own minds. Unresolved worries, regrets, anxieties, uncertainties, and difficult questions become more visible. A silent room can sometimes feel more uncomfortable than a noisy one because silence removes the barriers that normally keep these thoughts at a distance. Endless stimulation offers an escape route. Instead of confronting uncomfortable feelings, individuals can bury them beneath a steady stream of content.
This may explain why many people experience unexpected discomfort when attempting practices such as meditation. They expect tranquillity, but what they discover first is mental chaos. Thoughts race. Attention jumps from one subject to another. The noise was always present; the distractions merely concealed it. The 17th-century philosopher Blaise Pascal perfectly captured this human frailty long before the digital age, noting: "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone." Modern technology has merely provided the ultimate tool to ensure we never have to.
And this is not just happening to individuals; entire cultures are shifting toward shorter attention spans and more constant sensory input. Films are being cut faster, and news cycles are speeding up. Educational materials now compete with entertainment companies, whose developers are researchers looking for ways to capture and hold attention. We are now living squarely in an Attention Economy, a system where human attention is treated as a finite resource to be aggressively mined and monetised. Human attention was formerly guided by individual autonomy, but it has since become a marketable asset bought and sold on a global scale.
Despite this, there still remains a human desire for depth and purpose. People will continue to crave long discussions, meaningful literature, solitude, and time to reflect. The increasing popularity of mindfulness practices, digital detoxes, and retreats suggests that people are coming to the conclusion that something of value has been missing from their lives- that just because their bodies are bombarded with stimulation doesn't mean they are fulfilled.
There is a profound irony in the current human experience. For ages, our species has laboured to engineer an existence devoid of mental emptiness. Yet, having conquered that source of annoyance, we are now coming to the conclusion that we must desperately crave and reclaim the very quietude we once fled. While long seen as an obstacle, this transitional space provided the essential mental latitude required for internal reflection, creative breakthroughs, and the rare chance for the mind to encounter itself.
Perhaps the central challenge of modern life is not learning how to access more information. That task has already been solved. The greater challenge is learning how to create islands of silence within an ocean of noise. For in those rare moments when stimulation ceases, and boredom begins to stir, something remarkable often follows. The mind, freed from the demands of the next notification, finally gains the opportunity to encounter itself.
